About 5 km north of the town of Veliko Tarnovo, the Yantra river forms a gorge, on both sides of which, high above the river, are more than a kilometer long chains of rocks, with a height of 30 to 100 meters. There are paved roads to the two monasteries, which are located in the dense forests on the steep slopes below the cliffs. From the monastery there is a picturesque view of the opposite side.

The development of climbing routes on the site began in 1989 with the holding of one of the rounds for the world cup in sport climbing. Subsequently, the work on the rocks was continued by local climbers and alpinists. In 1992, with the assistance of the Bulgarian Alpine Club, the French specialists Jean-Marc Trossier and Pierre Favre were invited, who conducted a course on laying and equipping routes on rocks. With each subsequent year, the number of routes increases and today they are more than 100.
